16 & Pregnant – We Have Disposed Of The Spit Cup

This week, we meet Markai.  Markai lives with her mother, Sarina, and her sister, Samarra.  All was going well until Markai met James, who also appears to be the bane of her mother’s existence.  It could be because she got pregnant almost immediately after meeting James.  She doesn’t want her daughter to make the same mistakes she did.  So it’s yet another case of “Do as I say, not as I do.”  I do know where she’s coming from though.  She learned from the bad choices she made and doesn’t want her daughter to fall into the same trap.

My thoughts after the jump!

  • James says he doesn’t like condoms, because they get in the way.  Umm, isn’t that kind of the point?
  • Speaking of condoms, Sarina taught her daughters how to use them by practicing on a banana.  I would think that would be really awkward.  As the mom, I would be giggling non-stop (I never said I was mature) and as the daughter, I would be mortified.
  • Markai’s dad, Marcellas, took off when it came time to raise his daughters.  That’s really scummy.
  • Sarina tells Markai that she is disgusted by the sight of James, when James is sitting right in front of her.  I don’t know if it’s because he doesn’t have a job or because he got her daughter pregnant, but I’m guessing it’s a combination of both.  Even so, I felt bad for him when she said that.
  • Markai has felt the need to spit a lot during her pregnancy, so she carries around a Pringles can to spit into when the mood strikes.  This is totally unrelated, but it reminds me of this documentary I saw once where a woman had a tube in her stomach and couldn’t eat solid foods.  She still liked the taste of food though, so she carried around a can to spit her food into after she chewed it.  That’s all I could think of whenever I saw Markai’s “spit cup.”

Markai is never without her "spit cup."

  • Markai has also been craving soap and takes bites of a bar of soap occasionally.  Her doctor says that’s due to anemia and prescribes her iron pills.  I’ve heard of pregnant women craving soap, laundry detergent, clay, etc., but I’ve never known or heard about anyone that it actually happened to.
  • James starts looking for a job, but can’t find one.  During his job search, their car breaks down.  Since Markai is looking to move out of her mom’s house, this is not good.  So she decides to have James move in.  She says she mentioned it to Sarina, but Sarina disagrees.  I don’t know why they can’t just, you know, NOT live together for awhile until they’re on their feet.
  • Every time James talks, it has to be subtitled.  I’m not even entirely sure he was speaking English.
  • At one point, James stops looking for a job and spends all his time on MySpace talking to an ex who’s trying to hook up with him.  Markai gets all bent out of shape, thinking he’s going to cheat on her.  I don’t think I would like that either.  It’s one thing to talk to an ex, it’s another thing entirely to talk to one who still wants your body.
  • Around the time the baby is due, Markai calls her dad to see if why he isn’t visiting like he promised.  It was really sad.
  • James thinks breastmilk tastes gross, saying he’s tried it.  Either he has a really good memory, or…..I don’t even want to know the “or.”  (I have tried breastmilk in my adult life.  It actually just tastes like sugar milk, so not bad at all.  Maybe James was feasting on formula, which tastes pretty yucky, and he got them confused.)
  • Right after the baby, Za’Karia, is born, James is asked how he feels.  He replies, “Like a daddy.”  I totally teared up at that.  Awwwwwww.

    I feel like a daddy!

  • Markai’s father isn’t a total lost cause, because he seems pretty nice the rest of the episode.  He said he’ll “make some calls” about getting Sarina to allow James to live with them, which she does.  James has to sleep on the couch and get a job though.
  • Now the fun stuff happens!  After Markai starts back at school, James’ ex stalks her there and gets all up in her face how James slept with her after he started dating Markai and they didn’t use protection.  Markai confronts James to find out it was true.  He doesn’t think it’s that big a deal since it was a year ago and only 2 weeks into their relationship.
  • Markai later chases him down with her sister and screams at him on the side of the road.  I don’t think she handled it very well, honestly.  Her sister seems oddly freaked out about how the car is parked and makes a big show of moving it.

Parking the car here is the craziest thing you've ever done!!!

  • Markai dumps him and is then seems surprised when he didn’t come home that night.  She talks to her friend, who speaks words of wisdom.  She tells Markai that she should talk to James and get his side of the story instead of getting all up in his face right away.
  • This is funny: James’ friend says no one will hire him, because he’s “white with dreads.”  Hahaha!  It just seemed like a really strange thing for a friend to say, even though Markai said the same thing to him earlier in the episode.
  • Later, James is outside when Markai gets off work and he apologizes.  She seems to accept his apology for the most part, but says she doesn’t know how she’ll let it go.
  • Now they’re fighting again!  This time, it’s in the car and they’re really screaming at each other.  James’s subtitles are gone so I don’t know what he’s saying, but he doesn’t sound happy.  He jumps out of the car and Markai is chasing after him (just leaving Za’Karia in the car sleeping), beating up on him and telling him she hates him.  Then she’s saying she loves him and doesn’t want the other girl to take him.  Honestly, James seems like he really cares for Markai and I totally believe him that it was just a stupid mistake with his ex and he wouldn’t do it again.
  • They’re back together, but things are still strained between them.
  • Marcellas (Markai’s dad) comes by to see Za’Karia and him and Markai end up having a heart to heart.  He apologizes for not being there as much as he should have been and I kind of like him now.  He seems really sorry.  I know it doesn’t change the past, but hopefully he’ll be there now.
  • Unfortunately, Markai’s relationship with her mom has changed.  It’s not as open as it used to be.  I got sad again.  This episode was super emotional.
